5 Myths About Carpet That Need to Go
There are so many myths about carpet floating around out there, and honestly, I hear them almost every day here at our Mokena, Illinois, showroom. People walk in convinced that carpet is dirty, impossible to maintain, or just bad for their home overall. And then I show them what today’s carpet actually looks like, and they are genuinely surprised. So let’s clear the air. Here are five of the biggest myths about carpet that really need to go.
Myth 1:
Is Carpet Bad for People With Allergies?
Carpet is not bad for people with allergies. In fact, carpet can actually trap dust, pet dander, and pollen, so those particles stay out of the air you breathe. Hard floors let those allergens become airborne again every time someone walks across the room. With carpet, they settle down into the fibers and stay there until you vacuum them up.
The key is regular vacuuming with a quality machine. The Carpet and Rug Institute certifies vacuums that do a great job without damaging carpet fibers. Pair that with professional cleaning once a year, and your carpet is not working against you. It is actually working for you.
That said, every household is different. If you want to talk through your specific situation, stop by and see us. We are happy to walk you through your options in person at either our Mokena, IL, or Highland, IN, location.
Myth 2:
Does Carpet Always Look Dirty and Worn Out Fast?
No. Carpet that looks worn out fast is almost always the result of one of two things: the wrong carpet was chosen for that space, or it is not being maintained properly.
Here is something I tell customers all the time. Not all carpet is created equal. The fiber type, twist level, and face weight all play a role in how a carpet holds up over time. A low-quality carpet in a high-traffic hallway is going to look rough in a year or two. But the right carpet in that same space? It can look great for many years with the right care.
That is exactly why we spend time talking with every customer before recommending anything. We want to know where the carpet is going, who uses that space, and whether there are kids or pets in the home. The right match makes all the difference.
Myth 3:
Can You Not Clean Carpet Stains Effectively?
You absolutely can clean carpet stains effectively when you treat them the right way. The problem is that most people grab whatever spray is under the kitchen sink, and that is usually where things go wrong.
Most store-bought spot cleaners are detergent-based. They may look like they work at first, but they leave a soapy residue behind in the fibers. That residue attracts dirt over time, and suddenly the spot looks worse than before. Here is a quick test: put a little of your cleaner in your palm and rub your finger through it. If you see suds, do not use it on your carpet.
For natural stains like coffee, wine, or pet accidents, a mixture of one ounce of clear ammonia and three ounces of hydrogen peroxide works really well. Apply it to the stain, cover it with a plate, and let it sit for 24 hours. For other stains, a soap-free spotter is the way to go. We carry our own soap-free spot remover at both showrooms, and we even have a lifetime refillable bottle, so you are never without it.

Myth 4:
Does Carpet Cost More Than Hard Flooring in the Long Run?
This one surprises people, but carpet is often one of the most cost-effective flooring choices when you factor in the full picture.
Yes, luxury hard flooring options like solid hardwood or high-end tile tend to carry a higher price tag upfront. But carpet also offers something those floors do not: built-in cushion. That means you do not need a separate underpad or the same level of subfloor prep in many cases. Installation tends to be faster, too.
Carpet also adds warmth and sound absorption, which can be a real bonus in a bedroom or a finished basement. If you have ever lived above someone or had a room that echoed, you already know how much carpet changes the feel of a space.
And if you are working with a budget, our financing options make it easy to get the flooring you want without waiting. Plenty of our Mokena and Highland customers take advantage of that.
Myth 5:
Is Carpet Out of Style?
No way. Carpet is absolutely not out of style. It has made a real comeback in recent years, and I see it every week in the choices our customers make.
Bedroom carpet is one of the most popular requests we get right now. There is nothing better than stepping onto something soft and warm first thing in the morning. Cozy living rooms, finished basements, and home offices are also huge. People who work from home especially love carpet because it reduces noise and makes the space feel more comfortable during long hours.
Today’s carpet also looks completely different than what a lot of people picture when they hear the word. The textures, patterns, and colors available now are genuinely stunning. If you have not looked at carpet in a few years, you might be pleasantly surprised. We also carry a great selection of area rugs if you want to add softness to a hard floor space without committing to full installation.

What Should You Do Before Buying Carpet?
Before you buy carpet, come see it in person. Samples on a screen or in a small swatch only tell part of the story. You need to feel the texture, see the color in different lighting, and talk through the details with someone who knows what they are looking at.
Here is what I recommend:
- Bring a photo of your room so we can help you visualize how different options will look in your actual space.
- Know your traffic level. A bedroom and a family room have very different demands. The right fiber and pile for each is not always the same.
- Ask about warranty coverage. Most carpet manufacturers require professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months to keep the warranty valid. We will walk you through what yours covers.
- Do not skip the pad. A good quality pad underneath your carpet makes a real difference in how long it lasts and how it feels underfoot.
