Cleaning Your Carpet: A Master Guide
Cleaning your carpet properly is one of the best things you can do to protect your flooring investment. At Creative Carpet & Flooring, we talk to homeowners every day at our Mokena, Illinois, and Highland, Indiana, showrooms who are frustrated by spots that keep coming back or carpets that seem to get dirtier faster after cleaning. Most of the time, the problem is not the carpet itself. It is the cleaning method. This guide covers everything from daily habits to professional care, and I will share the same advice I give my customers in person.
How Do I Keep Carpet Clean Day to Day?
The best way to keep carpet clean day to day is to stop dirt at the door before it ever reaches your floors. These small habits make a huge difference over time.
- Use Doormats at Every Entrance – Place a doormat outside every entrance to your home. Then add one inside, too, so people have a spot to take off their shoes. This one-two punch catches the bulk of what people track in from outside.
- Make a No-Shoes-Inside Rule – Shoes carry dirt, bacteria, and outdoor grime straight onto your carpet fibers. Ask guests and family members to leave their shoes at the door. A small shoe rack near the entrance makes this easy and keeps things tidy.
- Change Your Air Filters Regularly – This one surprises a lot of people. Your HVAC air filter acts like a vacuum for the air in your home. When it gets clogged, dust, pollen, and pet dander settle right back onto your carpet. Change your filter at least every three months to keep indoor pollutants under control.
What Is the Best Way to Vacuum Carpet?
The best way to vacuum carpet is to do it at least twice a week, going over each area at least eight times. Vacuuming regularly is hands down the most important thing you can do for your carpet. But how you vacuum matters just as much as how often you vacuum. Here are a few tips to get the most out of every pass:
- Vacuum in multiple directions to pull out embedded dirt and debris.
- Go slowly over each section so the suction has time to work.
- Use a quality vacuum. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) certifies vacuums that perform well without damaging carpet fibers.
A good vacuum protects your carpet and makes professional cleanings more effective. Do not cut corners here.
Why You Should Skip Store-Bought Spot Cleaners
Store-bought spot cleaners are among the most common things I see causing long-term carpet problems. Most of them are detergents. They may look like they work at first, but they leave a soapy residue behind in your carpet fibers. Over time, that residue attracts dirt, and dark spots start reappearing in the exact places you cleaned.
Here is a simple test you can do at home. Pour a small amount of your spot cleaner into your palm and rub it with a finger. If you see or feel suds, do not use it on your carpet.
If you have already used a soapy cleaner on your carpet, do not panic. The residue may still be there even after it looks clean. Think of it this way: when you wash a dish, it takes a lot of water to rinse off the soap. Carpet is porous and absorbs much more. It can take a couple of professional cleanings to fully flush out that residue.
Also, be careful when hiring professional carpet cleaners. Many still use detergent-based solutions that create the same problem. If your carpet seems to get dirty faster after a cleaning, that is often why. We use soap-free solutions and do everything we can to restore your carpet to its best condition.
How Do I Treat Carpet Stains the Right Way?
Treat carpet stains as fast as possible. The longer a spill sits, the deeper it works into the fibers and the harder it becomes to remove. That said, the right treatment depends on what caused the stain.
Stains From Natural Sources (Coffee, Wine, Blood, Urine, Vomit)
Natural stains respond well to a simple homemade mixture. Mix one ounce of clear ammonia with three ounces of hydrogen peroxide. Do not add water. Spray the mixture onto the stain and cover it with a plate or saucer. Let it sit for 24 hours. In most cases, the stain disappears on its own. If it is still visible, repeat the process.
Stains From Non-Natural Sources (Grease, Ink, Synthetic Materials)
For stains that are not from a natural source, we recommend our own soap-free spot remover. You can pick it up at either of our showrooms in Mokena, Illinois, or Highland, Indiana. We even carry a lifetime refillable bottle so you never run out.
Here is how to use it:
- If the spot is wet, blot it first with a clean cotton towel to remove as much as possible.
- Apply the soap-free spotter to the area.
- Gently work it into the fibers with your fingertip. Do not scrub.
- Wait about one minute, then blot with a cotton towel.
- Repeat until the stain transfers to the towel.
The key is patience. Blot, wait, and repeat rather than scrubbing, which can damage the fibers.
How Often Should You Get Your Carpet Professionally Cleaned?
Get your carpet professionally cleaned at least once a year. If you have kids or pets, aim for every six to twelve months. Professional extraction cleaning every 12 to 18 months is also required by most carpet manufacturers to keep your warranty valid.
One thing to avoid: do not rent a carpet cleaning machine and try to do it yourself. Rental machines often leave too much water in the carpet, which creates the perfect conditions for mold and mildew. They also tend to leave residue behind, just like the store-bought cleaners we mentioned earlier.
You can schedule a professional carpet cleaning right on our website. We serve customers in the Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana areas and would love to help you get your carpet looking its best again.
