I had a customer last October ask me if we could still get hardwood installed before Thanksgiving. We were already close to what I call the point of no return, but I didn’t have the heart to tell her no. Twelve people were coming. Her mother-in-law included. We made it happen, but barely, and she told me afterward she wished she had called in September.

That’s the point of no return I talk about with almost every family who walks into our Mokena showroom this time of year. It’s not a hard deadline carved in stone. It’s more like the last exit ramp before things get tight. Late September is that ramp. Miss it, and you’re not out of luck, but you are cutting it close.

So here’s what I tell people, whether they’re calling me in August or already a little behind.

What Is the Flooring Point of No Return, Exactly?

What Is the Flooring Point of No Return, ExactlyIt’s the last realistic date to start a flooring project and still have it wrapped up before your holiday guests arrive. After that point, everything from material shipping to installer availability starts working against you instead of with you.

Carpet and hardwood don’t just show up and get thrown down in an afternoon. There’s acclimation time, install time, and then a few days where the room just needs to sit before furniture goes back in. Combine that with how packed our install calendars get in fall, and yeah, waiting has a real cost most people don’t see coming until it’s their turn to wait.

Why Late September, of All TimesWhy Late September, of All Times?

Because it sits roughly eight to ten weeks out from Thanksgiving, and that’s about the minimum runway a flooring project actually needs. Here’s where that time tends to go:

  • Ordering and shipping materials usually takes one to three weeks, depending on what you pick
  • Getting on an installer’s schedule during our busiest season
  • Removing old flooring and prepping the subfloor
  • The install itself, plus a few days for dust to settle and rooms to air out

Start measuring early, and you buy yourself breathing room on all four fronts. Start late, and none of that goes away. We just have to move faster together, and truthfully, we’re pretty good at that.

When’s Your Point of No Return?

Here’s the math I do in my head every time someone tells me they want floors done for Thanksgiving. Work backward from the holiday, and late September becomes obvious pretty fast.

TIMEFRAME WHAT TO DO WHY IT MATTERS
Early September (Week 1 to 2) Get your measurement scheduled Skip this and everything after it runs late
Mid September Pick a product, place the order Some materials ship faster than others
Late September, basically now, if you’re reading this in real time Lock in install date, clear the room This is the window that actually matters most
Early October Install happens, usually 1 to 3 days Bigger rooms just take longer, nothing mysterious about it
Later in October Furniture goes back, you walk through it with us Give it a few days before the party traffic starts
November Done Go enjoy your house

Torn between two products? Decide before mid-September. I’ve seen people lose a color option over one extra week of waiting.

Weather delay? Supplier running late? Tell us. Don’t guess and hope. We can work around most hiccups in the schedule, but only if we hear about them early.

Already past late September? Call us anyway. We’ve pulled off tighter windows than this one more times than I can count.

What Should I Choose for a Home That Actually Gets Used?

Shaw Floors Secret Journey in Dune View

Hosting takes a toll on floors. Spilled cider, muddy boots, kids running through in socks. Here’s what holds up:

  • Luxury vinyl in kitchens and mudrooms. Spills happen, boots track mud, it doesn’t care.
  • Hardwood in the dining room. Every holiday photo looks better with it underneath.
  • Carpet for bedrooms and that spot where you curl up with a blanket. Nothing beats it on a cold morning.
  • Tile by the front door. Boots, umbrellas, whatever the weather drags in, it just wipes clean.
  • Area rugs are perfect when you don’t need a whole new floor, just some warmth and a little color layered on top.

Not sure which of these fits your space? Come talk it through with us. That’s what the showroom’s for.

Insider TipInsider Tip: Don’t Fall for a Product Before You’ve Measured

Availability moves fast this time of year, faster than people expect. I had a customer plan her whole dining room around a specific plank style, then call me a week later asking why it wasn’t showing up anywhere. It was backordered the whole time. Get measured before you get attached to one product.

A few other things I mention constantly this time of year:

  • If speed matters more than picking the perfect thing, ask what’s already in stock or ships fast.
  • Get your financing sorted early, too. Approvals are usually quick, but it’s one less thing to worry about later.
  • Still comparing products? Our free floor buying guide is worth the 10 minutes it takes to read.

None of this has to feel overwhelming. It just has to start.
