I talk to a lot of homeowners at our Mokena showroom, and switching to LVP keeps coming up over and over again. Not because we push it. Because people are genuinely asking about it. They have seen it at a friend’s house, or their sister just had it put in, or they found it while falling down a flooring rabbit hole online at midnight. And then they walk in wanting to know if it is actually as good as everyone says. Spoiler: it usually is. But allow me to give you the real breakdown so you can decide for yourself.

What Exactly Is LVP?

Luxury vinyl plank is a layered synthetic flooring product that resembles hardwood but is constructed very differently. The core gives it structure and stability. On top of that sits a photographic layer that mimics real wood grain, sometimes so convincingly that people get genuinely fooled. Then there is a wear layer over everything that takes the scratches, the spills, the pet nails, and the daily grind, so the floor underneath does not have to. The result is something that looks great, cleans up easily, and does not require the kind of babying that real hardwood needs.

The wear layer on quality products handles pet nails well, and because it is waterproof all the way through, accidents do not seep in and create that smell that never quite goes away. • It looks like the real thing. I remember when vinyl was something you tried to hide. That is not the case anymore. The styles we carry from brands like Karndean, COREtec, and Karastan look genuinely beautiful. Customers walk into the showroom, run their hand across a display plank, and do a double-take. That never gets old.
• The price makes sense. Hardwood is an investment, and for the right home and the right situation, it is absolutely worth it. But a lot of homeowners do not need hardwood. They need something that looks great, holds up for years, and does not cost them a small fortune. LVP hits that sweet spot consistently.
• Installation goes faster. Most LVP clicks together without glue or nails. That means shorter installation time and less disturbance to your household. People appreciate that more than you might expect.

How Does Switching to LVP Compare to Other Flooring Options?

This is probably the question I get most. Here is how I explain it:

• Hardwood is gorgeous and has real staying power when it comes to home value. But it scratches, it warps when moisture gets to it, and it needs to be refinished over time. For the right room and the right lifestyle, nothing beats it. For a mudroom or a basement, it is the wrong call.
• Laminate looks similar to LVP and is very scratch-resistant, but most laminate is not waterproof. That one difference matters a lot depending on where you are putting it.
• Tile is nearly indestructible and fully waterproof, but it is cold in the winter and hard on your feet if you stand on it for long stretches. Great in the right spots, but not always the right call for a whole main floor.
• Carpet is soft, warm, and still a great choice for bedrooms. A lot of customers do a combination: LVP throughout the main living areas and carpet in the bedrooms. That is actually one of my favorite recommendations because you get the best of both.

What to Look for When You Are Switching to LVP

Not all LVP is built the same, and this is where I can save you some real headaches.

• The wear layer is where you start. That number, measured in mil, tells you how thick the protective coating is. For a busy home with kids and pets, I would not go below 12 mil. If you want something that will really go the distance, look at 20 mil or higher.
• Pay attention to the core. Rigid core LVP is what I steer most people toward. It feels more solid underfoot. It also stays put when your heat kicks on hard in January, or your AC runs nonstop in July. Illinois homes go through a lot of temperature swings, and some floors handle that better than others. Rigid core is the one that shrugs it off.
• Attached underlayment is worth looking for. Some LVP comes with foam backing already attached. It adds cushion and cuts down on sound, which makes a noticeable difference on upper floors.
• Plank size changes the whole look. Wider and longer planks tend to feel more like real hardwood and can help a room feel bigger. Bring a photo of your space when you come in, and we can narrow things down fast.

Insider Tips for Anyone Thinking About Switching to LVP

These are the things I share with customers before they make a final decision, and I think they are genuinely useful.

• Bring something from your room. A paint chip, a photo of your cabinets, a picture of your trim color. Trying to match things from memory is harder than it sounds. Doing it in front of an actual sample takes the guesswork out completely.
• Walk on the display samples barefoot if you can. You will feel the difference between a quality product and a thinner one right away. That feeling is information worth having before you spend anything.
• Ask about the warranty before you commit. A product with a strong warranty is a product the manufacturer actually stands behind. Some of what we carry comes with a lifetime residential warranty, and that means something.
• Do not skip the subfloor conversation. LVP is forgiving, but your subfloor still needs to be reasonably flat. If it is not, planks can flex and squeak over time. Our installation team checks for this before they start and handles it when it comes up.

And if you love the look of LVP but want some warmth in a sitting area, pair it with an area rug. It looks pulled together every time.

Is Switching to LVP Worth It Long Term?

For most homeowners, yes. A good LVP floor can last 15 to 25 years or more with normal care. It does not need refinishing. You clean it with a damp mop. It holds its look year after year. And because it holds up so well, you are not looking at replacement costs before you should be.

I have had customers come back years later, ready to do another room, and tell me the LVP they put in four or five years ago still looks brand new. That is the kind of feedback that makes this job genuinely satisfying.
