Every fall, someone comes into our Highland showroom and asks, “Did I wait too long to replace my flooring before the holidays?”

Usually, the answer is no. However, that does not always mean you should rush into it. If your floor is already picked out and your schedule is flexible, you may have plenty of time. If you are still deciding between carpet, hardwood, or luxury vinyl, waiting could save you some holiday stress.

There is no single right answer for every home. So, let’s look at the timing, possible disruptions, and what I would consider before scheduling the work.

You should replace flooring before the holidays when you have enough time to make a comfortable decision.

The biggest surprise for many customers is how long it takes to settle on a floor. You might love a sample in the showroom, then feel differently when you see it at home. Your lighting, cabinets, furniture, and wall colors can change its appearance.

One thing that really helps us is seeing photos of your space. Snap a few pictures that show the furniture, cabinets, wall colors, and any flooring that will stay. It gives us a much better idea of what will work in your home.

Sometimes customers come in determined to replace flooring before the holidays. Then we start going over everything else on their calendars. They are decorating, shopping, traveling, hosting, and finishing other home projects.

Suddenly, moving furniture and preparing rooms feels like one responsibility too many.

Waiting may be the better choice when:

I always ask customers how the room gets used. A floor can look beautiful on a sample board. Still, it needs to make sense for the people and pets living with it.

You should ask about product availability, room preparation, furniture moving, and installation time.

These questions help us give you a realistic idea of what the project will involve:

• Is the flooring available now?
• How long will installation take?
• Who will move the furniture?
• Will the existing flooring need removal?
• Does the subfloor need any preparation?
• When can the furniture be returned to the room?
• How should the new floor be cleaned?

How Can You Make Flooring Installation Less Stressful?

Start by removing small items, decorations, electronics, and anything fragile. Decide where your pets will stay during the installation. Also, make sure our team can easily reach the rooms being updated.

I would not plan an installation the day before hosting a large gathering. Even when everything goes smoothly, you will want time afterward.

You may need to clean, arrange furniture, and put the room back together. More importantly, you deserve time to enjoy the finished result.

Should You Replace Flooring Before the Holidays or Wait?

If you already know what you want and have time to spare, go ahead and replace flooring before the holidays. You will get to enjoy the new look when everyone gathers at your home.

However, I would never suggest forcing the project into an already packed schedule. Come into the showroom, look at your options, and take a few samples home. If everything falls into place, great. If not, you will be ready to schedule the installation once the holidays are over.
