Giving Back to Our Community
By Dawn Giganti,
Giving back to our community is not something we schedule once a year and check off a list. It is genuinely part of who we are. As a family-owned and operated business with showrooms in Mokena, IL, and Highland, IN, we have always believed that real success means more when you share it with the people around you. Our neighbors are not just customers. In fact, they are our community. And that matters deeply to us.
Why Does a Flooring Company Care About Giving Back to Our Community?
Honestly, it starts with family. We are not a big box store. Instead, we are a family that happens to sell carpet, hardwood, luxury vinyl, tile, and laminate flooring. We live in these communities, send our kids to school here, and drive the same roads as our customers. So when someone in our neighborhood is struggling, it hits close to home. Giving back to our community feels less like a program and more like a natural extension of who we are. Ultimately, it is simply the right thing to do.
Over the years, that commitment has taken shape in a lot of different ways. Food drives, coat drives, and fundraising campaigns have all been part of the story. Each one has shown us something new about the needs right here in our own backyard.
How We Support Families Near Our Mokena, IL Showroom
Our Mokena showroom partners with MorningStar Mission in Joliet, IL. MorningStar Mission primarily serves individuals and families experiencing homelessness and financial hardship across Will County, with specific programs that also reach into Kendall and Grundy counties.
I will be honest with you. On my way home from work, I drive past MorningStar Mission, and almost every time I see a line of people waiting outside to get in. Then, on my way in the next morning, some of those same people are still out in the area. That is not something you can unsee. These are real people, right here in our region, who need a meal, a warm place to sleep, and someone to believe they are worth helping.
That is exactly why our Mokena team shows up every Thanksgiving and every winter to collect food and coats for MorningStar Mission. Moreover, we do not do it because it looks good. We do it because we have seen the need with our own eyes and simply cannot look away.
What Does MorningStar Mission Do?
MorningStar Mission provides emergency shelter, meals, and housing programs to people across Will, Kendall, and Grundy counties. Rather than offering a simple handout, they give people a real path forward out of homelessness and hardship. Furthermore, their programs are designed not just to support individuals but also entire families who have hit rock bottom. You can learn more or donate directly at morningstarmission.org.
How We Support Families in Northwest Indiana
Our Highland, IN, showroom partners with Grace Beyond Borders NWI, Inc. in East Chicago, IN. Founded in 2013 by Marcus Martin, Grace Beyond Borders meets the physical and spiritual needs of people facing homelessness and addiction across East Chicago, Whiting, and the broader Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland area. Their philosophy is simple and powerful. Rather than handing things out, they offer a genuine hand up.
Each Thanksgiving and every winter, our Highland team collects food and coats to support Grace Beyond Borders and the families they serve. Over the years, we have watched this organization grow and seen firsthand the dignity and hope they restore to people who need it most.
A 9-Year-Old’s Prayer That Stayed With Us
There is a moment from Grace Beyond Borders that has never left us. A 9-year-old girl whose family had fallen into homelessness was staying at their Women and Children Mission. One morning, she asked if she could lead the prayer. She thanked God for keeping her family together, asked for protection as they walked the earth, and begged for a safe place her family could call home.
That is a real child in Northwest Indiana, not a statistic. In one recent period alone, Grace Beyond Borders served 132 children from 46 families who were growing up without a permanent home. Clearly, these are kids who deserve stability, safety, and the same chances every child deserves. Giving back to our community means showing up for them, too.
How You Can Help Grace Beyond Borders
Grace Beyond Borders relies on community support to provide shelter, meals, clothing, and housing assistance. You can donate online at www.gracebeyondborders.org, via Zelle at mmminc53@gmail.com, or by mailing a check to Grace Beyond Borders NWI Inc., P.O. Box 927, East Chicago, IN 46312. Even a small monthly gift makes a meaningful and lasting difference.
Giving Back to Our Community Happens All Year Long
We want to be upfront about something. We do not do any of this for marketing. Rather, we do it because it is the kind of company and the kind of neighbors we want to be. When you visit one of our showrooms, shop online to browse area rugs, or ask about carpet cleaning, you are supporting a business that puts its community first. That connection is genuinely important to us.
Additionally, our team members show up for these drives because they want to, not because anyone tells them to. They are neighbors, too, and that says everything about the kind of people we are proud to work with every day.
How Can You Join Us in Giving Back to Our Community?
You do not have to wait for a company-hosted drive to make a difference. Below are a few simple ways to help right now.
- Volunteer your time. Local missions and shelters always need extra hands. Even a few hours of your time can deliver a lot of meals and real hope to families who truly need them.
- Donate directly. Both MorningStar Mission and Grace Beyond Borders accept donations year-round and put every dollar to work immediately in the communities they serve.
- Spread the word. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply tell people about an organization doing good work. Share this post, bring it up at dinner, or text a friend today.
- Host your own drive. Collecting food or coats from your home, office, or church is easier than you think. Besides, the impact adds up faster than most people expect.
We Are Proud to Be Part of These Communities
Being a family business means the places where we live and work are personal to us. The families in the Mokena area and across Northwest Indiana are our people, and we are grateful every day to serve them. We are equally grateful for every chance we get to serve them beyond the showroom floor.
