You cannot go wrong if you are thinking about putting in wooden flooring. Hardwood flooring has unmatched natural beauty and goes with any decor. The best rooms for hardwood flooring are the living room, dining room, den, home office, and master suite. On the contrary, rooms with moisture, like bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, kitchens, and foyers are not ideal.

UNFINISHED VS. PREFINISHED

Unfinished wooden flooring is the way to go if you want a custom stain or to match an existing floor. Therefore, after the installation and stain, several coats of protective finish are applied. Prefinished hardwood flooring comes from the manufacturer sanded and sealed. Of course, this makes the installation job go a lot faster. Also, you do not have to deal with odors, VOC's and you can walk on the floor immediately after it is installed.

SOLID VS. ENGINEERED

Solid hardwood flooring is exactly that... solid wood. It usually comes 5/8" to 3/4" thick. Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished several times. However, it is susceptible to changes in humidity and is not recommended for below-grade basements. Engineered hardwood flooring is a layer of real wood veneer glued to several layers of wood. It has excellent stability and is an excellent choice for any area of your home, including basements. Some say it is okay, but we do not recommend sanding or refinishing engineered hardwood, regardless of how thick the veneer layer is.

WOOD SPECIES

The best hardwood floors are made with readily available wood species. Also, oak, maple, and cherry are tough woods and excellent flooring choices. Similarly, other species include bamboo (which is a grass), walnut, ash, and mahogany. In addition, there are also more costly exotic woods like teak, jarrah, and mesquite.
